Josep Renau (1907–1982), a multifaceted Valencian artist, political activist and intellectual, was appointed Director General of Fine Arts in 1936. He helped safeguard Spain’s art collections during the Civil War and commissioned Picasso’s *Guernica* for the 1937 Paris International Exposition. Forced into exile, Renau settled first in Mexico, where he worked as a poster artist, before moving to East Germany to continue his artistic career. Filmed in Valencia and Germany, *Josep Renau: Art in Danger* retraces his childhood in Valencia’s Cabanyal district and explores the murals he created in Halle-Neustadt, which still stand today. The documentary features testimonies from artist Marta Hoffman, art historian José Miguel G. Cortés, biographer Fernando Bellón, critic Manuel García and Doro Balaguer, Renau’s friend and founder of the Josep Renau Foundation.
